Chevalier Editions
In 2013, Chevalier édition decided to enrich its catalog by signing 5 collaborative works with five architects. Inspired by the designs of the metallic meshes with which Gaëlle Lauriot-Prévost and Dominique Perrault clothe their architecture with constancy and rigor, persevering in their domestication of the industrial element. Turned into a material for finishing floors, walls, ceilings and façades since the adventure of the BnF, metallic mesh, with its cold and austere materiality, here gives way to benevolent warmth of wool and silk. The method of the designer is the same as the architect’s. Here, the mesh has been transmogrified into a reiterated chevron, which contracts and stretches… right to the edges of the rug so as to avoid interrupting the obsessive repetition of a single motif. The designer and architect and duo were able to take advantage of the thickness of the rug to restore–by overbraiding– the spiraling effect of the mesh, and thus make it more visible, flush with the wool, the mechanical back-and-forth of weaving. The chevrons, which either sink into the wool, or dilate across the entire surface, electrify the rug. Space becomes blurred and loses its neutrality. Hand-knotted rug by Chevalier édition.
